Things get weird in world sport in the Week From the Outer

FlaresTHE world of sport has had a strangely cheeky tinge to it this week.

We’ve seen Emanuel Newton blaming sex for an MMA loss, AFL heavyweight Eddie McGuire claiming A-League fans must be smuggling flares into games using only their bodies and Colin Kaepernick cutting his former teammates’ grass.

If there’s one thing we can take from this week is that sports stars and their fans need to behave themselves.

A-League flare-up

Overly-excited fans have been blamed for smuggling flares into A-League games, letting them off and throwing them like colorful, smoking grenades.

This crowd behaviour has created a furor in Australia not seen since meat pies cost $6.50 at the AFL.

A-League big-wigs are calling it urban terrorism. Some supporter groups are calling the A-League paranoid. Supporter groups are even claiming that letting off flares enhances the soccer viewing spectacle: they do it in Eastern Europe and South America… because both those areas are international beacons of stability and should be held up as examples.

Noted A-League ignorant and Collingwood Football Club president, Eddie McGuire, added his two cents, claiming that fans must be smuggling flares into the stadium up their rear-end.

So, if you ever find yourself at an A-League game and someone asks you to pull their finger. Don’t.

In Argentina a soccer referee, Cesar Flores, was shot multiple times by a player he had just red-carded. The player apparently left the field, only to return minutes later and open fire on Flores.

And the “purists” who try to rationalize the use of flares say, “they do it in South America”. Let’s hope that’s the only soccer-related habit we pick up from South America.

Blaming sex for a loss

Former Bellator light heavyweight champion, Emanuel Newton, has blamed sex, of all things, for his last loss.

This comes ahead of his Bellator MMA 149 bout on Saturday against Linton Vassell.

In an interview, Newton harped on that sex “took away” his hips, and that’s why he lost to Phil Davis last September.

I will blame anything other than sex for all of these incidents. Wasn’t sex’ fault. Who could blame something we adore so much.

Newton also explained that his narrow victory against Linton Vassell in 2014 was due to the fact that he had smoked weed the day before he flew out for the fight.

WilliamHill.com has Newton as $1.75 favorite over Linton Vassell ($2.05) on the 20/2/2016. But I think it wouldn’t hurt to invest a bit of coin on Vassell because it seems as though Newton can resist everything except temptation. And who knows? Someone could offer him some herb and cheeky times just before the fight – who could say no to that?

Kaepernick confirms he’s cutting the grass

After months of speculation stemming from an ugly altercation at their summer camp, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has finally confirmed he is seeing Nessa Diab, the ex of another former 49ers player, Aldon Smith.

Kaepernick has been on the outer with his 49ers teammates and coaching staff alike. His teammates have given him the cold shoulder for cutting a former teammates’ grass and the coaching staff aren’t his greatest admirers because on the field he has been about as effective as a one-legged man in an ass-kicking competition.

All of these factors, as well as the change in coach at the 49ers, all points to Kaepernick heading to the East coast to be closer to his new girlfriend.

SportsBet.com.au has the 49ers at $101 to win Super Bowl LI in the 2016/17 season. Check their American Football page for a full list of odds.
