EITHER he knows something we don’t, has more money than sense, or possesses a set of cojones a mere man could only dream of.
One Austraian punter has slammed down one of the biggest stakes on the US Election in Australian history with a massive $200,000 laid in total on Hillary Clinton to become the next president.
He’s obviously betting that the Americans are not moronic enough to elect a racist bigot to become the leader of the free world, but the jury will be out on that until November 8.
The huge bet forced Clinton’s odds in from an already skinny $1.45 to a now very tight $1.36.
Her Republican opponent Donald Trump has now been wound out to $3, after he was $2.70 before the quartet of bets totalling $200,000 were laid by the punter.
The punter laid his first lot of bets at $1.50 and then others at $1.45. He will make nearly a third of his stake back if Clinton manages to become America’s first female president.
He was obviously moved by Clinton’s rousing performance at the Democratic National Convention last week, where she slapped down Trump and gave her cause a huge shot in the arm with an inspiring speech that resonated with Americans.
She became the first woman to be endorsed by a major party at the convention, where she was supported by her husband and former president Bill Clinton and daughter Chelsea.
“The US Presidential election is certainly captivating the Australian audience with one sportsbet.com.au punter smashing the ceiling of large bets accepted so far,” the bookie’s Will Byrne said.
“This punter is obviously confident that Hillary will be back amongst familiar surroundings next January.
“Donald Trump has gone from one public disaster to another and has drifted from $2.70 out to $3.”
So poor has be been in recent days, sportsbet.com.au is actually offering a market on him being fired by the party before election day.
It is a long shot at $21, but, with growing rumblings of unrest in the Republican camp, it is certainly not beyond the realm of possibility.
In his latest controversy, Trump has told a supporter to “get that baby out of here” after it cried while he was delivering a speech.
The pompous Trump first told the woman, after her child cried: “Don’t worry about that baby, I love babies.”
“I hear that baby crying, I like it!” he said.
“Don’t worry.”
You could smell the irony as he put on a show.
But it was not long before he showed his true colours:
“Actually, I was only kidding, you can get the baby out of here,” he said
“I think she really believed me that I love having a baby crying while I’m speaking!”
The incident is a drop in the ocean compared to the attack he has launched against the muslim parents of a decorated US soldier.
Khizr and Ghazala Kahn, parents of slain Army Captain Human Khan – who was killed in a bomb attack in Iraq – spoke at the Democratic Convention, challenging Trump to look up the meaning of the word “liberty”.
“Tonight we are honoured to stand here as parents of Captain Humayun Khan and as patriotic American Muslims with undivided loyalty to the country,” Mr Khan said.
“If it was up to Donald Trump, he never would have been in America.
“Donald Trump consistently smears the character of Muslims.
“Donald Trump, you are asking Americans to trust you with their future, let me ask you — have you even read the United States Constitution?
“I will gladly lend you my copy.”
The parents said the billionaire businessman had sacrificed nothing in his life.
But The Donald fired back, saying his “tremendous success” was built on “a lot of sacrifices”.
“I work very, very hard,” he said.
“I’ve created thousands and thousands of jobs, tens of thousands of jobs, built great structures.
“I’ve had tremendous success.
“I think I’ve done a lot.”
Trump then turned his attention to the Khan’s, wondering if they had actually written the speech, as they had claimed.
“Who wrote that? Did Hillary’s script writers write it?” Trump said.
“If you look at his wife, she was standing there, She had nothing to say.
“Maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say”.
The attack is seeing Republicans turn on Trump and Democrats piling on the pressure, with fellow party member John McCaine and outgoing president Barak Obama the latest to lay into him
Senator McCainer, a prisoner of war in Vietnam for five years, said in a statement: “while our party has bestowed upon him the nomination, it is not accompanied by unfettered license to defame those who are the best among us.”
Obama refused to refer to Trump by name, saying: “As commander-in-chief, I’m pretty tired of some folks trash-talking America’s military and troops.”
“No-one has given more for our freedom and our security than our gold star families.
