Origin, NBA Champions & McGuire in this week’s top 10 tweets

TwitterThe NBA Championship has been decided, State of Origin has been decided, the NBA no. 1 Draft spot has been decided and I want to start a petition to have Ben Affleck commentate NFL games forevermore.

Let’s see how the Twitterverse summed up these events and more.

10. Biggest sports bet ever!

“Vegas” Dave Oancea has laid claim to laying the largest sports bet of all time. Oancea has reportedly backed current women’s bantamweight Champion, Meisha Tate, to overcome Amanda Nunes at UFC200.

If Vegas Dave were an Aussie you would have to think he would bet with SportsBet.com.au, which would give him $410,000 if Tate wins.

9. NSW loses again

The Queensland Maroons locked up their 10th Origin series win in 11 years this week.

Game 2, played in Brisbane, ended with the Maroons up 26-16 and the Blues in tears.

It hasn’t even been 24 hours since the final whistle blew, but New South Wales identities are already howling for players’ scalps and sweeping changes.

If Blues’ supporters rage and vitriol is anything to go by then Michael Jennings, Greg Bird, Paul Gallen, Robbie Farah and Dylan Walker’s Origin career’s are as doomed as the Dodo. Jennings efforts were so spectacularly counter productive to his team there are rumours that the NSWRL have hired forensic accountants to see if Jennings received any payments from the QRL to throw the game.

Game 3 of the series, now a dead rubber, moves back to ANZ Stadium in Sydney. Despite being down two-nil in the series, SportsBet.com.au has the NSW Blues as favorites on $1.80 and the Queensland Maroons at $2.

8. Eddie realises it’s impolite to threaten to drown a woman

Last Monday’s Big Freeze at the G was a bad day for Collingwood Magpies president, Eddie McGuire: he managed to get himself in hot water AND cold water on the same day.

While talking with Kangaroos’ president James Brayshaw and Danny Frawley on radio station Triple M, McGuire suggested they all throw in a couple of grand to entice columnist Caroline Wilson to go down the ice slide next year. Frawley then suggested they could raise more money by taking bids to hold Wilson under the water.

Now I don’t know if political correctness is getting the best of the AFL, but what is happening to this game when you can’t casually solicit others to drown a female columnist on a national radio broadcast? Has the world gone topsy turvy?

PalmerBet.com.au currently has Collingwood @ $501 to take out the 2016 AFL Premiership.

7. LeBron James, G.O.A.T.?

LeBron James has come good on his promise to finally deliver a Championship to Cleveland.

The Cavs were down three games to one in the NBA Championship series to the Golden State Warriors. LeBron and the Cavs looked down and out: things were very grim indeed. It looked as though Cleveland’s 50 year sporting drought was set to continue.

But then, out of thin air, LeBron and the rest of the Cavaliers pulled a proverbial rabbit out of a hat to become the first team in Championship history to come back from a 3-1 deficit and win!

Perhaps the most iconic picture of the entire finals series was LeBron’s massive block on Andre Iguodala in the dying minutes of Game Seven, with the scores tied up.

Despite cleaning up this year, LeBron’s Cavaliers are second favorites in the NBA Championship futures betting according to SportsBet.com.au. They have the Cavs ($4) behind the Golden State Warriors ($3.50) to take out the 2016/17 Championship.

6. Ben Simmons: No. 1

Aussie basketball sensation Ben Simmons took out the number one draft pick in the NBA draft earlier this week and is now heading to the Philadelphia 76ers.

This marks the fairy tale end to a massive year for Simmons, which saw him score a $14 million Nike sponsorship.

Despite picking up Simmons, WilliamHill.com.au has the 76ers dead last @ $251 to take out the 2016/17 NBA Championship.

5. Ben Affleck to commentate the NFL!!!!

Ben Affleck has finally produced the finest performance of his career. I know, it’s been a long time coming with Affleck, having to suffer through swill like Phantoms, Gigli, Reindeer Games or Pearl Harbour.

Affleck came out swinging on the premier of Bill Simmons new HBO sports chat show. The topic of Affleck’s beloved New England Patriots and the infamous Deflategate scandal was raised. This sent Affleck on an hillarious tirade that makes me want to start a petition to have Affleck commentate every Patriots game from now until the end of time.

Some nay-sayers in the community have accused Affleck of being drunk on Simmons’ show. Well if that’s the case, load him up with a carton Hennessy and hole him up in the commentators box for every Patriots game!

CrownBet.com.au has Affleck’s Patriots as equal favorites to take out Super Bowl LI @ $9.

4. Dane Swan hijacks Collingwood’s Twitter feed

During the Magpies’ Round 14 clash with the Fremantle Dockers, the keyboard connected to Collingwood’s official Twitter account was handed to injured star Dane Swan.

Swan didn’t disappoint Tweeting hilarious updates and insights during the ‘Pies thrashing of the Dockers.

In fact, Swan was so entertaining throughout the night that there were calls for him to throw in this footy caper and take the reigns of the Collingwood Twitter feed permanently. We can only hope.

3. Wallabies and the Spider-cam

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has blown up deluxe about two crucial points after the Wallabies 44-40 loss to the English Roses.

The first thing that boiled Cheika’s blood was when an English kick hit the Spidercam, drastically changing the trajectory of the ball. This allowed the Poms to regain possession through lock Maro Itoje. From there the Poms kicked the pill for the corner, gifting the Wallabies a line-out.

The second point of controversy came as Aussie Stephen Moore was allegedly pushed in the back by touch judge, Mike Fraser, as he threw the line-out, resulting in England winning the line-out.

Cheika has quite rightly called for the rules regarding Spidercam interference to be reviewed.

SportsBet.com.au has the Wallabies as gross outsiders before the Bledisloe Cup this year. The Wallabies are fetching $7 to win the Cup back from the All Blacks ($1.09).

2. Zika strikes again

The specter of the Zika virus has struck again, with gold medal favorite Rory McIlroy withdrawing from Rio2016 due to fears of the virus.

With big name golfers dropping out of the Olympics left right and center the gold medal may be decided simply by default. Whichever golfer holds out the longest from withdrawing over fears of the Zika virus will be the last man standing. At this rate the golf at the Olympics may be decided without a club being swung!

LuxBet.com.au now has Jordan Speith ($6) as the gold medal favorite with Jason Day ($7) hot on his heels.

1. Knockout of the year?

Michael Chandler has thrown his hat in the octagon for knockout of the year with his lightning fast knockout of Patricky Freire at Bellator 157 to be crowned the new Ballator lightweight world champion.

Chandler stunned the crowd, commentators and Freire alike with a right that could be missed in the blink of an eye. Poor Freire didn’t know what hit him…
