BACKING the winner of the Melbourne Cup is no easy feat – but CrownBet.com.au are doing their best to improve your odds in the race that stops a nation.
The Australian bookmaker has opened up a Top 10 market for the 24-horse race.
This top 10 market makes an ideal bet for punters wanting to take the shorter odds for an increased chance of a payout. The best price available is $19 for Sertorius to run Top 10 and that’s a good bet in anyone’s book.
CrownBet has also released their specials markets, which includes head-to-head and group betting. They have pitted the Aussies against the each other where Preferment is narrowly edging Criterion in the market.
There’s even a Trip Advisor market and best of the weights. It’s all there for the big race this Tuesday at Flemington, so sign up and get involved.
Melbourne Cup Top 10 market
Fame Game is the current favourite across all markets and multi-bet punters will enjoy the $1.40 available for the Top 5 option at CrownBet.
Bettors can get double their money for over half of the 24-horse field (Top 10 market) which is great value and we have the full market below.
Fame Game – $1.10
Trip To Paris – $1.35
Preferment – $1.50
Max Dynamite – $1.55
Criterion – $1.57
Almoonqith – $1.60
The United States – $1.75
Our Ivanhowe – $1.80
Who Shot Thebarman – $1.90
Bondi Beach – $1.90
Hartnell – $2.30
Hokko Brave – $2.30
Excess Knowledge – $2.30
Red Cadeaux – $2.15
Kingfisher – $2.25
Gust of Wind – $2.50 at CrownBet.com.au
Sky Hunter – $2.80
The Offer – $3.20
Grand Marshal – $2.80
Snow Sky – $2.80
Big Orange – $3.20
Prince Of Penzance – $3.70
Quest For More – $5.50
Sertorius – $19
There has been plenty of money for 10-year-old Red Cadeaux which has placed in the Melbourne Cup on three occasions.
The Ed Dunlop-trained runner always runs a good race at Flemington and a top 10 finish wouldn’t surprise any punter around Australia.
Other horses that look a good chance at odds are Gust Of Wind and The Offer. The John Sargent-trained Gust Of Wind finished fourth in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup where it was ridden upside down, so it should finish inside the top 10.
The Offer will be suited by any moisture in the track and with train forecast on Monday, the Gai Waterhouse-trained runner looks an outside chance to run a good race. It is currently paying $6.50 in the top 5 market at CrownBet.
CrownBet Melbourne Cup head-to-head options
There are three head-to-head options available to bet on. Aussies vs. Internationals, Chris Waller vs. David Hayes and the “uphold the law” option which has Who Shot Thebarman taking on Grand Marshal.
Aussies – $1.70
Internationals – $2.15
The “aussies” are horses trained by Australian trainers. The imported horses that now race under an Australian trainer will be counted as Aussies.
There are 13 aussies and 11 internationals and among them are the current favourites Fame Game and Trip To Paris. Based on that, the $2.15 for the internationals looks the way to go.
Chris Waller – $1.80 at CrownBet.com.au
David Hayes – $2.00
Chris Waller has three genuine chances in the 2015 Melbourne Cup which includes Who Shot Thebarman, Grand Marshal and Preferment.
David Hayes, alongside training partner Tom Dabernig, lines up Criterion and Almoonqith. Both Hayes runners are strong chances, but Waller has a better chance of winning with more entrants, and he’s prepared his runners beautifully.
The uphold the law option is the cleverly-named market featuring two Waller-trained runners. Who Shot Thebarman is currently paying $1.45 to beat stablemate Grand Marshal and that looks a strong option for multi-bet punters.
Melbourne Cup group betting and tips
Group betting allows the big field of 24 runners to be split up into different betting markets. CrownBet currently have markets involving Australian-only horses, international runners and they have divided the field three-ways into different weight classes.
Plenty there for everyone and we start with the best Australian horse where Preferment holds favouritism at $5.

Melbourne Cup Tripadvisor and other specials
Tripadvisor:
Our mates at CrownBet love to frame a market which has a funny side to it. The tripadvisor market features three horses which all feature travel names which makes for an entertaining bet.
Trip To Paris – $1.70
The United States – $3.50
Bondi Beach – $4
Trip To Paris is the short favourite in this option after finishing second in the Caulfield Cup. The United States won the Moonee Valley Cup last time out, but it only just made the field.
Bondi Beach is the unknown runner from Europe which has a master trainer and it could be the overlooked runner at nice odds. We’re prepared to stick with what we know and take Trip To Paris at $1.70.
Winning Region:
Australia – $2.15
Europe – $2.90
Japan – $3.60
Australia have more runners than any other region which is why they are favourites. We don’t consider Hokko Brave to be a main contender, therefore the $3.60 for Japan doesn’t represent much value, seeing as Fame Game is currently $4 for the win.
Best of the Top Weights:
The field has been split into threes based on their weights. The first seven runners (top weights) all carry more than 55.5kg and it’s no surprise to see Fame Game as the short favourite.
Fame Game – $1.55
Criterion – $5.50
Our Ivanhowe – $11
Hokko Brave – $13
Big Orange – $13
Snow Sky – $17
Hartnell – $21
Best of the Middle Weights:
The middle weights carry 55kg down to 53.5kg. Trip To Paris is the favourite, but this option has a very tight market which means good value for punters.
Trip To Paris – $3.20
Preferment – $4.20
Max Dynamite – $5
Who Shot Thebarman – $6
Red Cadeaux – $11
Sky Hunter – $15
Grand Marshal – $15
The Offer – $17
Quest For More – $34
Best of the Bottom Weights:
The light weights are carrying 53kg or less and the David Hayes/Tom Dabernig-trained Almoonqith is currently the favourite at $3.80. There are some quality types in this category with The United States, Bondi Beach and Gust Of Wind.
Almoonqith – $3.80
The United States – $4.80
Bondi Beach – $5
Kingfisher – $5
Excess Knowledge – $6
Gust Of Wind – $8 at CrownBet.com.au
Prince Of Penzance – $15
Sertorius – $51
