Sportsbet installs 19 Aussies as favourite to claim Olympic Gold

WITH just a few days remaining till the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympic Games, Sportsbet.com.au has anticipating a successful summer campaign for Australia.

Australian athletes are outright favourites to win 19 separate events at Sportsbet.

The pool is expected to be our most lucrative venue for gold medals after the online bookmaker put Australians at the head of affairs in nine different events.

Sisters Cate and Bronte Campbell head the markets in both the 50m and 100m freestyle, while a bet on the Aussie women’s 4 x 100 freestyle relay to win the gold is among the safest of the entire games at $1.12.

Australia’s gold medal push is likely to be just as successful outside of the water at Rio.

The Aussies are the favourites in the men’s quadruple sculls ($1.91) and the men’s K4 ($3).

Superstar rower Kim Brennan is the hot favourite to win at the women’s single sculls at $1.40, while gun pairing Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmin are the $1.67 favourite to win the Mixed Gender Narca.

The remainder of Australia’s gold is expected to come from the hockey pitch, rugby field and shooting range.

The Kookaburras ($3.60) are expected to win their second ever Olympic gold medal in the men’s hockey, just shading the 2012 runners-up, the Netherlands ($3.75).

The Aussie women are expected to dominate the debut Rugby 7s Olympic market, going in as the red-hot $1.72 favourites ahead of New Zealand at $3.

Aussie shooting duo James Willet and Warren Potent head the markets in their respective events.

Willet is the $3.60 favourite to take out the men’s trap, while Potent is the $3.20 top elect in the men’s 50m prone rifle.

Although the individual markets will generate a lot of intrigue, the Aussie Olympic betting markets extend further than just the single events.

Sportsbet has set a number of overall gold medal betting markets, including an Australian total gold medals market.

Australia winning between 11–15 gold medals is the favourite at $2.00, but if all the 19 individual favourites manage to salute punters can earn $6.00 for 16-20 gold.

Think we can get the better of our big brother? Sportsbet have the market for that too.
Punters can also get a healthy $4.60 if they think we can topple the Poms in the overall gold medal market.

Sportbet spokesperson Ben Bulmer believes the bulk of the Aussie gold will come from the pool.

“We are a week out from Rio and the odds suggests our swimmers will be doing the heavy lifting for the nation, with the team expected to walk away from the pool with nine gold,” he said.

Although there is plenty of optimism around Australia’s gold medal chances, Bulmer thinks it would be unrealistic to expect the green and gold to top the medal tally.

“The Australian Olympic team is expected to finish in the top 5 on the medal table, joining Russia at $51 on the fourth line of betting, but frustratingly behind Great Britain, which is the $26 third favourite.”
